Empowering Hazara Voices: Uniting Culture, Community, and Care

Kateb Hazara Association is the largest and most established Hazara organisation in NSW. KHA was established and is managed by Hazara people with lived refugee experience. We have excellent relationships with other Afghan organisations in NSW and nationally. KHA history, experience and background contribute to our in-depth understanding of the issues faced by newly arrived Hazara community members. We have delivered multiple projects for the Hazara community including: purchase and full payment of two community properties which serve as focus of activities and interaction for the Hazara community in Sydney, social/cultural/religious events, Hazaragi language school, sporting teams and tournaments, individual welfare and social support, information sessions, art projects and more recently significant involvement in Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD) COVID suppression and vaccination initiatives.

Further, a number of KHA leaders have employment history in health, welfare and settlement agencies catering to the needs of Hazara newly arrived refugees and humanitarian entrants – STARTTS, Settlement Services International (SSI), NAVITAS, Advance Diversity Services, Community Migrant Resource Centre and other settlement providers. We have engaged with majority of Hazara evacuees who have recently arrived to NSW. We have collaborated with SSI to source long-term accommodation via our Real Estate contacts, provided clothing and other necessary items, delivered social and emotional support, facilitated access to services and wider Hazara community, and provided activities for children and young people. All of the above involvement and history enabled us to develop an in-depth, extensive knowledge and understanding of the support needs and strengths of the target Afghan cohort.
